The history of the Dolls House
The hobby of building miniature homes and then furnishing them with miniature furniture is not a recent one. It has in fact been around for centuries. The first recorded dolls house was from the mid-sixteenth century and was owned by Albert V, Duke of Bavaria. The house was a replica of the house in which he lived which is much the same of many of the early models with the houses being made to match the houses of the wealthy people who commissioned them. They were always made to a very high standard by skilled craftsman. These baby houses were not the toy we have today but were more a way to demonstrate wealth and social standing to others.
In to the seventeenth century the doll’s house begun to be enjoyed by the children of the wealthy homes. They were used more initially as educational aids showing kids how to run a house. By the nineteenth century the doll’s house had finally become a toy that could be played with although it was still only for the children of wealthy homes. All wealthy homes had a nursery and none would be found without a dolls house.
It was the Victorian age when mass production started for both the doll’s house and the furniture that it held. This was done mainly in Germany where the houses and parts were made and exported all round the world.
For a long time dolls houses have become a collectable item especially for adult collectors. It wasn’t however until the 1970’s that this really took off with both the houses and dolls house furniture being collected. Suddenly there were a variety of models and room furniture making it a really hobby of substance.
In the late 20th Century the doll’s house has become a worldwide hobby that is available to anyone and not just the children of the wealthy. They are available in a number of materials, colours and designs and come with an almost endless number of furniture sets to collect. It remains a great way to educate children in how homes of the past were furnished but they are more often than not used for fun these days.
